Acoustic insulation in windows: what actually matters

It's not just thick glass that cuts outside noise. Here are the factors that really matter for good acoustic insulation in windows, and where people usually get it wrong.

Many people assume thicker glass or triple glazing automatically solves the noise problem. In reality, acoustic insulation depends on several factors, and some of them matter more than the thickness of the glass.

What affects acoustic insulation

  • A difference in thickness between the two glass panes (asymmetric glazing) cuts noise better than two identical panes
  • The gap between the panes (air or gas chamber) needs to match the pane thickness, not just be as wide as possible
  • The seals on the window frame, often overlooked, but essential
  • Correct installation, with no gaps between frame and wall, properly foamed and sealed
  • Hardware that ensures even closing pressure all around the window

Double or triple glazing for noise?

Triple glazing isn't automatically quieter than double glazing. If the gaps between panes are equal, triple glazing can even amplify certain frequencies. For heavy street noise, we recommend a glazing configuration calculated specifically for acoustic insulation, not just the standard glazing with the most panes.

Frequently asked questions

Does thicker glass automatically mean less noise?

Not necessarily. The difference in thickness between the glass panes and the gap between them matter more than the total glass thickness.

Do exterior roller shutters help with acoustic insulation?

Yes, a lowered exterior shutter adds an extra layer that reduces street noise, in addition to thermal protection.
